Taiwanese rescuers searched for 18 people still missing on Friday (April 5) after a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck the island’s mountainous and scenic east coast earlier in the week. Dozens of aftershocks have rattled the disaster zone but those cut off and unable to leave were gradually being taken to safety. Hualien mayor Hsu Chen-wei said four foreigners — two Australian-Singaporean dual nationals, one Indian, and one Canadian—are among the missing.
