Climate experts: Amazon summit response to climate change, oil, deforestation broad, lacking ANC
Climate change, oil exploitation, and deforestation were the main gaps in the agreement reached at the end of the Amazon Summit that closed in Brazil on Wednesday (August 9), climate policy experts said. The joint declaration issued on Tuesday in the Brazilian city of Belem, named after the host city, created an alliance for combating forest destruction. But left countries to pursue their own individual deforestation goals. This week’s summit brought together the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) for the first time in 14 years, with plans to reach a broad agreement on issues from fighting deforestation to financing sustainable development.
