On The scene: A chimpanzee caged for 28 years gave a look of awe and wonder at having freedom after seeing the open sky for the first time at a Florida sanctuary. Vanilla spent her early years in a medical research lab, the nonprofit Save the Chimps said, before being moved to a California wildlife sanctuary, where she had more room, but was still in an enclosure. When that sanctuary closed in 2019, Vanilla and 41 other chimps had to be re-homed.
