An emergency meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) was held on Wednesday (August 7) at Iran’s request to discuss the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh and Iran’s response. Iran and Palestinian Islamist group Hamas accuse Israel of carrying out Haniyeh’s assassination on July 31. Israel has not claimed or denied responsibility. The U.S. hopes states from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) impress upon Iran the need to avoid escalation, said State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller on Wednesday (August 6).
