Senior Citizens in Japan join search for, removal of nuclear contaminated soil, water ANC
On The Scene: A civilian group of Japanese environmental protectionists, composed of elderly Japanese residents aging over 80, have devoted themselves to searching and removing nuclear contaminated soil and water in areas in Fukushima which have been declared ‘decontaminated.’ In areas where /”decontamination/” has been carried out, evacuation instructions can be lifted and people can be called back to their homes. However, Aoki found that many areas where /”decontamination/” had been carried out still contained excessive radiation levels. There are more than 80 people in the environmental protectionists team, and one of the criteria for recruiting members is to be over 60 years old. The reasoning being that they have not much life left, while young people have a long life ahead of them.
