Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen visited Hualien on Wednesday (April 10) to check on disaster relief efforts, one week after a deadly earthquake struck the island’s mountainous and scenic east coast. Speaking at the local earthquake command center, Tsai vowed to strengthen Taiwan’s resilience and thanked search and rescue personnel involved in the efforts. The 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit the city on the morning of April 3, toppling houses and causing landslides in a nearby national park. At least 13 were killed as a result of the quake.
