From April 25, day trippers will be charged a 5 (5.45) fee as part of an attempt to better manage the flow of visitors in an attempt to “protect the city from mass tourism”. The charge will initially be implemented on 30 particularly busy days in the spring and summer. The policy was designed to respond to the particular problem facing Venice, which is that around 80% of its tourists come just for the day. Research has shown that such a high proportion of day trippers – who tend to spend little – pushes a tourist destination towards decline. All travellers to Venice will have to register their visit in advance and obtain a QR code online. Day trippers will then have to pay the fee; visitors staying overnight will not.
