On The Scene: Crowds could be seen celebrating in Rafah, Gaza on Monday (May 6) evening after Hamas said it had accepted a ceasefire proposal from mediators. But Israel played down the likelihood of a ceasefire in Gaza and said military operations would continue. Hamas said in a brief statement that its chief, Ismail Haniyeh, had informed Qatari and Egyptian mediators that the group accepted their proposal for a ceasefire.
