World number three Carlos Alcaraz trained on Tuesday (April 23) as he continues his comeback from injury setbacks with hopes of defending his title at the Madrid Open.

Alcaraz told reporters he was feeling great and while not wanting to confirm his participation at the ATP Masters event just yet, the reigning Wimbledon champion did admit he would love to contest the final against his childhood idol, former world number one Rafa Nadal.

The 20-year-old successfully defended his Indian Wells title and reached the Miami Open quarter-finals in March before sustaining a right arm injury in his first practice session for the Monte Carlo Masters earlier this month which forced him to pull out of the ATP 1000 event as well as the Barcelona Open.

Alcaraz’s countryman Nadal also trained on Tuesday ahead of his first round match against wildcard Darwin Blanch.

The 37-year-old 22-time major winner, who returned to tour action for the first time since January in Barcelona, has struggled with injuries for the last two years and has said he expects to retire after the 2024 season.
