Israel carried out airstrikes in Rafah on Monday (May 6) and told Palestinians to evacuate parts of the city where more than a million people uprooted by the seven-month war have been crowded together, often in filthy conditions that have contributed to the spread of diarrhea and disease. The Israeli army dropped leaflets written in Arabic over the city ordering Palestinians to evacuate and move towards the west of the city and the city of Khan Yunis. The leaflet says that all residents of eastern Rafah must evacuate immediately. The evacuation order sparked fears of a full-blown assault in Rafah, long threatened by Israel, against holdouts of the Palestinian militant group Hamas, seven months after Hamas killed 1,200 people in southern Israel on Oct. 7 and took 252 hostages, according to Israeli authorities. Not shortly after, Hamas said they have accepted a proposed ceasefire deal with negotiators, though Israel says their operations continue while the deal is being reviewed.
