On The Scene: In Jakarta, where severe flooding and massive extraction of groundwater from aquifers is causing it to rapidly sink by more than 15 cm a year, mangroves have been the main defence against rapidly rising tides. Tour groups are now planting mangrove sprouts and kayaking through mangrove forests, a sign of hope for conservationists as public appreciation for these wetlands grow.
